通常通り訳した場合、英文では、“applying the technology described in the Reference 2 to the invention described in Reference 1”となり、”Reference 1”と“Reference 2”の語順が日本語の場合と逆になる。しかし、”Reference 2”が“Reference 1”よりも先に出てくると、“which belongs to the same technical field”の部分は、先行詞が直前になく、意味をなさない。このような不一致に対処する方法はいくつもあるが、上記翻訳例のように英文構造を並べ替えるのが最も簡単である。このような英文構造は一般的ではないが、文法的には正しく、理解可能といえる。
